Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry started functioning in 1996 as a part of Vaagdevi Degree and PG College. From its inception, the department has been actively engaged in providing quality theory and laboratory teaching programs for undergraduate students.

The department has the distinction of introducing the first Postgraduate Science programme in Vaagdevi Degree and PG College. The two-year M.Sc Chemistry programme was established in the year 2000 along with state-of-the-art PG and research laboratories to support advanced learning and research activities.

Warm greetings from the Department of Chemistry. It gives me immense pride to welcome you to one of the most vibrant and dynamic departments of Vaagdevi Degree & PG College. Chemistry is often called the “Central Science” because it bridges Physics, Biology, Medicine, and Environmental Science. At our department, we strive to make this central role come alive for every student.

Our B.Sc Chemistry programme builds a strong foundation through concept-based teaching and extensive laboratory training. We focus on developing analytical skills, scientific temper, and practical knowledge that prepares students for competitive examinations, higher studies, and careers in pharmaceutical and chemical industries.

The M.Sc Chemistry programme emphasizes advanced learning combined with research exposure. Students undertake dissertation projects in thrust areas such as Green Chemistry & Sustainable Catalysis, Natural Product Chemistry & Drug Design, and Environmental Chemistry & Water Analysis.

The department is equipped with modern UG and PG laboratories featuring instruments such as UV-Visible Spectrophotometer, FTIR, Flame Photometer, Conductivity Meter, Potentiometer, and Digital Balances to support practical learning and student research projects.

Beyond academics, we encourage students to participate in seminars, workshops, science fairs, and outreach programs to apply their knowledge to real-world challenges. Our aim is to nurture highly skilled graduates and postgraduates prepared for careers in academia, industry, research, and government sectors.

Chemistry is not just about reactions in a laboratory — it is about questioning, discovering, and creating. We invite every student to explore this fascinating world with us and transform their potential into excellence.

About the Department

The Department of Chemistry has been committed to academic excellence and research since its establishment in 1996. The department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes with a balanced emphasis on theoretical concepts, laboratory training, and research exposure.

With the growing demand for Chemistry graduates and postgraduates in pharmaceutical industries, research organizations, and academic institutions, the department continuously updates its curriculum and teaching methodologies to meet industry and societal needs.

The department actively promotes research programmes aimed at addressing scientific and technological challenges of the 21st century. Through innovative teaching, practical exposure, and research-oriented learning, students are encouraged to become competent professionals and responsible citizens.
