Department of Chemistry
The department started functioning from 1996 as a part of Vaagdevi Degree and PG College. Both theory and laboratory teaching programmes for graduates have started from the first day of Department. The department has distinction of starting the first Post graduate programme in science at Vaagdevi Degree and PG College. Two year M.Sc chemistry degree programme was started in 2000. A state of the art PG and research laboratories was also established. There is a dearth of Chemistry Graduates and Post Graduates. Many pharmaceutical companies are in need Graduates and Post Graduates in chemistry to support their RD and process chemistry. The department is committed to excellence in chemistry by establishing research programmes for meeting scientific and technological challenges faced by the science centered world of the 21st century. Our aim is to produce highly sought after and knowledgeable Graduates and Post graduates for pursuing careers with academia, industry and government.
Vision:
To be a successful model for education, research and innovation in the chemical sciences.
Mission:
- Provide distinctive and appropriate education in the chemical sciences at the Post graduate and graduate levels.
- Carry out world-class research and scholarly work with relevance to contemporary problems of society and industry.
- QUALITY POLICY: Department of Chemistry is committed to deliver quality education for all-round development of the students to meet the changing requirements of industry, business and society.

Vaagdevi Degree & PG College
Warm greetings from the Department of Chemistry. It gives me immense pride to welcome you to one of the most vibrant and dynamic departments of Vaagdevi Degree & PG College. Chemistry is often called the "central science" because it bridges physics, biology, medicine, and environmental science. At our department, we strive to make this central role come alive for every student.
For Undergraduate Students:
Our B.Sc Chemistry program builds a strong foundation through concept-based teaching and extensive laboratory training. We focus on developing analytical skills, scientific temper, and practical knowledge that prepares students for competitive exams, higher studies, and entry-level roles in Pharma and chemical industries.
For Postgraduate Students:
The M.Sc program emphasizes advanced learning coupled with research exposure. Students undertake dissertation projects in thrust areas such as Green Chemistry & Sustainable Catalysis, Natural Product Chemistry & Drug Design, and Environmental Chemistry & Water Analysis. Our goal is to nurture independent researchers ready for Ph.D programs, R&D labs, and teaching careers.
Infrastructure & Facilities:
The department has well-equipped UG and PG laboratories with instruments including UV-Visible Spectrophotometer, FTIR, Flame Photometer, Conductivity Meter, Potentiometer, and Digital Balances to support both practical learning and student research projects.
Beyond textbooks, we encourage all students to participate in seminars, workshops, science fairs, and outreach programs to apply their knowledge to real-world problems. The achievements of our alumni — from UG students excelling in higher studies to PG students in research and industry — stand as testimony to the strong foundation we provide.
To our students: Chemistry is not just about reactions in a lab. It is about questioning, discovering, and creating. Whether you're starting your B.Sc journey or pursuing advanced research in M.Sc, I invite you to explore this fascinating world with us and transform your potential into excellence.

UG / PG Programmes
Department of Chemistry offered Under Graduate programme (BSc) as Chemistry one of the optional along with Bio Technology, Bio Chemistry, Micro Biology, Food and Nutrition, Zoology, Botany, Computer Science, Physics and Computer Applications for the benefit of the students and to get bright careers with their Bachelor degree.
During this programme we deliver principles of chemistry in the mode of theory and practicals with utmost perfection and proper motivation which can be helpful to the students to get placements in MNCs like Dr. Reddy's, Hetero, Cipla, Ranbaxy, Rankem, etc. Every year many of our students are selected through placement drives conducted at our college campus and outside.
As part of our academic curriculum, the Department of Chemistry has offered a 2-year Post Graduation programme, M.Sc (Organic Chemistry), since 2000. We provide practical-based education by involving students in various Government of India funded research projects (Human Resource Development Group, Ministry of Science and Technology, and Council of Scientific and Industrial Research India), conducting industrial tours, and interaction programmes with eminent personalities in Chemistry.
We also sponsor students to attend National and International Conferences in India and abroad through International Student Exchange Programmes, Summer Research Fellowships, and internships at CSIR–Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad, which are highly beneficial for their careers.
